Неспешный голос с татарским проглатыванием окончаний пробасил:
— Как ж не тот, дурь твоя башка! Сказан ж было — который с косоглазым китаезом, того и бей.
— Дык этот не китаеза, а киргизец.
— Сам ты киргизец! Мног у нас тут по Хитровке косоглазых-то ходит? А и ошибся бы — невелик беда. Скинули бы в рек, да дел с концом.
A slow, deep voice with a Tatar accent, swallowing the endings, rumbled:
— How is it not the right one, you fool! I told you — hit the one with the squint-eyed Chinaman.
— But this one’s not a Chinaman, he’s a Kyrgyz.
— You’re the Kyrgyz! How many squint-eyed ones do we have walking around Khitrovka? And even if you made a mistake, it wouldn’t be a big deal. We’d toss him in the river, and that would be the end of it.
