Bunk, cot, bed. Derived from the Dutch schans (entrenchment) or German Schanze, entering Russian via nautical jargon (шканцы — quarterdeck) before shifting into prison slang. It refers specifically to a prison bunk or a cheap, hard cot in barracks and dormitories.
