Crazy, nuts, mad, batshit, loony. Derived from the colloquial Russian verb чокнуться (to clink glasses/toast; to go crazy, to lose one’s mind). The shift from clinking glasses to mental instability comes from the metaphorical idea of receiving a blow to the head or having something “rattle” inside. In everyday speech, it is a very common adjective used to describe someone who is eccentric, mentally unstable, or acting irrationally (ты совсем чокнутый? — “are you completely nuts?”). It can also describe wild, unbelievable ideas or situations (это какая-то чокнутая идея — “that’s a crazy idea”).
Вообще, существует очень четкое деление: одни люди, как выпьют, становятся добренькими, другие — злыми и неприятными. Этот человек относится к третьим. Когда пьяный, он не злой, не добрый, а чокнутый…
