четвертной m [četvertnoj]

Old name for 25-Rouble banknotes, that circulated in Russia until the 1990s. Also called четвертак (although the latter is mostly used for 25 kopecks).

In Chekhov’s “The Wedding,” a quart of rubles was paid for the presence of a “real general” at the wedding. However, the general turned out to be fake, and the money was pocketed by the intermediary.
