хрен

Penis — literally “horseradish”. Хрен can replace хер or хуй in 90% of the expressions. The word хрен is not very strong, хер is rude and хуй is very vulgar. This gives the opportunity to express one idea with different degrees of rudeness.

Crap, junk, nonsense; thingamajig. Derived as a milder, euphemistic alternative to the profane root хуй (specifically mimicking the structure of херня). In everyday slang, it is an incredibly versatile and ubiquitous noun used to describe low-quality stuff, annoying nonsense, or any random object whose name you cannot recall (что это за хрень? — “what kind of crap is this?”, or нести хрень — “to talk utter nonsense”).
