Crap, junk, nonsense; thingamajig. Derived as a milder, euphemistic alternative to the profane root хуй (specifically mimicking the structure of херня). Versatile and ubiquitous noun used to describe low-quality stuff, annoying nonsense, or any random object whose name you cannot recall (что это за хрень? — “what kind of crap is this?”, or нести хрень — “to talk utter nonsense”).
