Badly, poorly, crappily, feeling under the weather / like shit. Derived from the noun хрен (horseradish), which in Russian serves as a very popular, socially acceptable euphemism for the heavy mat root хуй (dick). Through the adjectival form хреновый and the adverbial suffix -о, it is used in everyday speech to describe a poor state of affairs, low quality, or feeling physically or emotionally unwell (всё прошло хреново — “everything went poorly”; мне сегодня что-то хреново — “I feel kinda shitty today”).
Вот поэтому так хреново у нас губернаторы и работают.
This is why our governors work in such a fucked-up way.
