Grub, nosh, chow, eats. Derived from the verb хавать (to scarf down, to munch, to eat), which originally entered mainstream Russian slang from criminal argot (fenya) and Romani roots. In everyday speech, it is a highly popular, casual noun used to describe food, snacks, or a meal in general (надо купить какого-нибудь хавчика — “we need to buy some grub”).
Пришли на базу, но вожделенного ужина не увидели. Косматый откровенно катал вату и хавчика не приготовил.
We arrived at the base but did not see the coveted dinner. Kosmaty was blatantly faffing and had not prepared any grub.
