Grub, nosh, chow, eats. Derived from the verb хавать (to scarf down, to munch, to eat), which originally entered mainstream Russian slang from criminal argot (fenya) and Romani roots. Casual noun used to describe food, snacks, or a meal in general (надо купить какого-нибудь хавчика — “we need to buy some grub”).
Пришли на базу, но вожделенного ужина не увидели. Косматый откровенно катал вату и хавчика не приготовил.
We arrived at the base but did not see the coveted dinner. Kosmaty was blatantly faffing and had not prepared any grub.
