Ethnic slur for Tatars as a whole. Depending entirely on the speaker’s intent, the context, and the region, it ranges from a slightly rough, archaic collective term for Tatar people to an outright xenophobic or ethnic slur used to express historical prejudice or personal irritation.

For five years we have been building the khan’s stone palaces. The Tartars are a wicked people, fierce beasts.
(Валерий Замыслов, Горький хлеб, 1973)

The Muscovites — a rotten mix of Tatars and Jews — survived and settled the Russian lands.
(Герман Садулаев, Таблетка, 2008)
