Son of a bitch, bastard; git, total bastard, magnificent bastard. A classic insult built on the root сука (bitch) and сын (son). While historically literal, it functions identically to its English counterpart and can be used in two completely opposite ways depending on the speaker’s tone and intent: 1. A hostile insult directed at someone who has acted maliciously, deceptively, or cruelly (этот сукин сын украл мои деньги — “that son of a bitch stole my money”); 2. An expression of reluctant respect for someone’s sheer luck, cleverness, or audacity, made famous by the poet Alexander Pushkin’s self-praise: Ай да Пушкин, ай да сукин сын! (он опять выиграл в лотерею, ну и сукин сын! — “he won the lottery again, the lucky bastard!”).
