Mug, ugly face; erysipelas (medical). A highly colloquial, rude, and expressive noun used to describe a person’s face, usually implying that it is ugly, distorted, or wearing an unpleasant expression. Historically, it is also the official medical term for erysipelas, an acute bacterial skin infection that causes painful, bright red inflammation, which heavily influenced the word’s negative, repulsive connotations in everyday speech.
