охренеть v pf [ohrenet’]

To be baffled, stunned, surprised. Used to express extreme shock, surprise, disbelief, or intense admiration. It is derived from хрен. Because it uses the euphemistic root, it is completely free of actual profanity but carries a very strong, raw emotional punch: 1. Used when something unbelievable or crazy happens (я просто охренел, когда увидел цены — “I was just completely gobsmacked when I saw the prices”); 2. Can mean that someone has lost all sense of boundaries or decency — “have you completely lost your mind saying that to me?”).

On Friday, there was a mishap. The secretary decided to play it safe, and to avoid forgetting to change the clocks on Monday, she changed them right on Friday. Of course, without any ulterior motive, just during the lunch break. Anyway, the CEO was really surprised when he came to see us at 5:10 PM and found that everyone had already checked the clocks and left for home at 6:00 PM :-)
