Shark week, crimson tide, menstruation (literally “paints” or “colours”). Used casually among women or partners to announce the arrival of menstruation (у неё опять краски начались, живот болит — “her period started again, her stomach hurts”).

Он родился у старой, сорокапятилетней женщины, моей прабабушки, которая была убеждена, что у нее «краски ушли», то есть кончилась менструация.

He was born to an old, 45-year-old woman, my great-grandmother, who was convinced that her “time of life” was over, meaning she no longer had her period.
