With the same unrestrained theatricality that makes a blatny “sign” with a knife on the corpse of a killed renegade, or publicly rape a woman in broad daylight in front of everyone, or abuse a three-year-old girl, or infect a queer man with syphilis — with the same expressiveness, the blatny poeticizes the image of the mother, deifies her, makes her the subject of the finest prison lyrics — and obliges everyone to show her all kinds of remote respect.
