Arse, butt, bum; (slang) disaster, total mess, terrible situation; a remote/boring place. Derived from the Proto-Slavic *žopa (originally meaning a hollow, pit, or cavity). In everyday Russian, it is one of the most anatomically common and highly expressive vulgar nouns. Beyond its literal meaning (buttocks), it is extensively used in metaphorical and idiomatic contexts: first, to describe a catastrophic failure or a desperate situation (наступила полная жопа — “everything went completely to hell”); second, to refer to a remote, underdeveloped, or godforsaken location (often in the phrase жопа мира, literally the arse of the world); third, to describe a mean, stingy, or stubborn person (жопа or жопник). Diminutives: жопка, жопочка. Superlative: жопища. Derivated terms: голожопый, хитрожопый, черножопый.
