Prison guard, screw, turnkey, watchdog. Derived from the Ukrainian verb вертітися (to spin, turn around, or watch closely), which historically entered Soviet camp slang (Gulag argot) to describe a sentry or guard who constantly turned around on a watchtower. In everyday speech, it is a highly contemptuous, derogatory, and sharp slang term for any prison guard, security officer, or an overly controlling, authoritarian figure who watches over others (эти вертухаи на входе опять устроили обыск — “those watchdogs at the entrance set up a search again”).
