братан (братуха, брачо)

братан (братуха, брачо) m [bratan (bratuha, bračo)]

Bro, brother, homie, partner-in-crime. Derived from the standard noun брат (brother) with the popular Slavic colloquial suffix -ан. While it can function as a warm, friendly address among close friends, it carries a deep, historical weight in Russian criminal argot. In the criminal underworld and the organized crime culture of the 1990s, it explicitly designated a fellow member of a gang, a trusted criminal associate, or an equal within the hierarchy (слышь, братан, тут наши пацаны рамсы попутали — “listen, bro, our boys got into a messy dispute here”). It implies fierce loyalty to the gang’s code (понятия) and a shared criminal lifestyle.
