бабкосело

бабкосело n [babkoselo]

Backwater, middle of nowhere, dead-end village. Derived from a humorous, slightly derogatory blending of бабка (old woman/granny) and село (village/countryside). In everyday slang, it is a highly expressive compound noun used to describe a remote, completely isolated, or culturally stagnant village or small town where the population consists almost entirely of elderly people, with zero infrastructure, entertainment, or youth (нас на всё лето отправили в какое-то бабкосело — “they sent us to some middle-of-nowhere dead village for the whole summer”).

Минобороны гордо рапортует о захвате бабкосёл, которые в жизни не упомянули бы в ежедневной сводке от Советского информбюро тех лет.

The Ministry of Defence proudly reports the capture of tiny backwater villages that would never have merited a mention in the daily bulletins of the Soviet Information Bureau in those days.
