Big, strong and usually not too bright guy, often a bit intimidating. It is initially the Ossetian word æмбал meaning “Hero, warrior, friend”.
Передо мной возник амбал —
Даст в лоб разок и трупом ляжешь…
А он дрожа пролепeтал:
Где туалет здесь, не подскaжешь?
A burly guy appears before me —
One hit to the forehead, and you drop dead…
But trembling, he stammers:
“Do you know where the bathroom is?”
