To fuck, to shag; to scold, to ream out; to bother. Derived from the Proto-Slavic root *jebati. It is the ultimate, most foundational verb in the entire system of Russian profanity (mat). In its literal sense, it means to have sexual intercourse (они ебутся на заднем сиденье — “they are fucking in the backseat”). However, its figurative versatility is practically limitless: it can mean to aggressively reprimand someone (начальник меня полчаса ебал — “the boss reamed me out for half an hour”), to struggle intensely with a difficult task (я весь день ебусь с этим кодом — “I’ve been fucking around with this code all day”), or to voice supreme shock or frustration via the standalone exclamation ёб твою мать! (“holy fuck!” / “fuck your mother!”). Belonging to the very absolute core of Russian obscenity, this word is highly taboo and strictly forbidden in any polite, public, or professional discourse.
