To take a picture, a snapshot, to shoot. In everyday speech and youth slang, it became highly popular with the rise of portable cameras and smartphones. It is used as a casual, informal synonym for фотографировать (to photograph). It can be used both intransitively to describe the act of taking photos (он весь день ходил и просто щёлкал затвором — “he walked around all day just clicking away”) and transitively to mean photographing a specific subject (щёлкни меня на фоне этого здания — “snap a picture of me with this building in the background”).

Slit, crack, gap; gash (vulgar). A noun that operates on two vastly different levels. In standard Russian, it is a completely clean, technical, or everyday word for a narrow opening, crack, or crevice. However, in vulgar slang, it is used as an objectifying, crude anatomical metaphor for the vulva or vagina, directly equivalent to the English “slit” or “gash”.

Derived from the standard verb щемить (originally meaning to pinch, squeeze, or cause a gnawing ache), which evolved into a reflexive form denoting restricted or fearful movement. In everyday slang, it carries two distinct notes: first, it means to squeeze or push oneself into a tight space, or to frantically bolt/flee from a scene (все начали щемиться из вагона — “everyone started squeezing out of the carriage”); second, particularly in street, military, or prison subcultures, it means to hide away out of sheer fear, to cower, or to avoid someone dangerous (чё ты щемишься от меня? — “why are you hiding from me?”).

Dipstick, probe. Literally a mechanical tool used for measuring fluids (like an oil dipstick in a car) or a technical probe. In vulgar slang, it is used as a humorous, crude metaphor for the penis, drawing an obvious parallel to a long, thin rod used to “measure” or probe depths.
